Living on an island, surrounded by the sea, allows us adventure lovers to try our hand at an ever increasing list of water-based activities. Traditionally popular pastimes such as sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking, will always be on the experience list for school groups, but a new breed of thrill seekers are pushing the boundaries, introducing activities such as kite surfing and playboats to a wider audience. As an instructor, the opportunities for employment continue to increase year on year, a fantastic result for our industry. As long as you have some good instructing or coaching qualifications to your name, you should have a good chance of securing a seasonal role at one of the many lake or coast based activity centres, up and down the country.

As well as our paid employment opportunities for watersports professionals, we also took a step back and thought about those of you who currently lack the NGB qualifications required to secure these top jobs. Everyone has to start somewhere, and when it comes to watersports careers, the RYA or Royal Yachting Association will become your friend. The RYA offer a wide range of skills courses and instructor qualifications that are internationally recognised, meaning you can put your skills and knowledge to good use as far afield as Dubai, UAE or Sydney, Australia. The most popular watersports instructor qualifications we see from the RYA include the Dinghy Instructor – a course which covers boat handling and navigation and is ideal for activity centres that offer introductions and taster sessions for sailing. Powerboat Instructor award is usually a requirement for many of the other RYA courses as it teaches you how to use a boat with an engine. Personal Watercraft includes jetski type vehicles, and finally Windsurf Instructors.
